Download the audio file from a conference call we had with John Doryk on May 6th.  On the call John shares his experience and insight on the business and technical aspects of film scoring.  He also discusses what students will learn at our Christian Composers Camp.  The call lasted an hour and 50 minutes.  To download the 20MB MP3 file right click on the link below.

John Doryk Interview

Tuesday, June 23rd:  We are two days into the Rocky Mountain Christian Composers Camp and boy are we having a blast! John Doryk is pumping so much information into us it’s like drinking from a fire hydrant. He is lecturing in the morning and we have hands-on lab in all afternoon.

So far John has covered the process of creating a film score including subtopics of the initial call with the client, concept cues, spotting session, scheduling, composition prep, working with session players, edit and final mix of scores, handling revisions, and final screening/playback. Tomorrow we’re getting into the craft of film scoring.

The picture shows John working with two of the students during the lab time.

During lab all the students were given a short film clip to write a score for. After supper we relaxed with singing around the camp fire (Monday night) or going rock climbing (Tuesday night).

Wish you all were here. We’re having a fantastic time! I’ll try to write more later in the week.

Wednesday, June 24th:  We had another outstanding day!  Today John got into the craft of film composing.  He stressed the importance of viewing the musical score as another actor.  Sometimes it is the lead, sometimes it is a supporting role, and sometimes it is an extra.  All are very important to the success of the film but all must be kept in their appropriate place.  John also covered the Relationship between Music and Sound Design, and then got into the Technology and the Craft of Orchestration.  He went through various virtual instrument libraries and taught us techniques for making the virtual instruments sound like live players.

After dinner we all went out to Box Canyon Falls in Ouray.  Here's a picture of John (in white hat) and the students standing in front of the falls.

Thursday, June 25th:  Today we learned about orchestration.  John taught us about how each instrument is typically used, what instruments go well together and which instruments do not go well together. He also touched on the emotions each instrument can be used to convey.  After dinner we had a camp fire and made doughies, a camp tradition.

Friday, June 26th:  That's a wrap!  The 2009 Rocky Mountain Christian Composers Camp came to a close today.  Our final session was on the business aspect of film composing.  John covered the various jobs related to film music.  He also went over the various business arrangements a film composer may be offered to score a film.  After lunch we reviewed each of the students projects that they had worked on during lab all week.  Each student was given a short film clip to score.  All of the students did a fantastic job.
